Governor Quinn Signs Bill to Protect College Students from Fires in Illinois Dormitories
ORLAND PARK, Ill., Aug. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Today at the Chicago Fire Prevention Bureau, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed HB4757, a bill requiring fire sprinkler protection in on-campus dormitories at public and private colleges and universities across the State of Illinois.
Such post-secondary educational institutions must file a compliance plan with the Office of the State Fire Marshal, which details their timeline for completion of the fire sprinkler system installations. They will be required to have all dormitories retrofit with operational fire sprinklers by September 1, 2014. Institutions that violate the requirements will be fined up to $1,000 per day.
Tom Lia, executive director of the nonprofit Northern Illinois Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board applauds Governor Quinn for signing the bill.
"Thanks to the passage of this bill, parents who send their children to colleges and universities in Illinois will be happy to know that their children will be protected from fires while they are living away from home."
