Governor Cuomo Honored As Champion Of Education By Teaching Matters
NEW YORK, Oct. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Andrew Cuomo will be honored for his statewide effort to reform teacher evaluation and support systems when Teaching Matters presents him its annual "Champion of Education" award in ceremonies at noon, October 16, at the Harvard Club in New York City.
Teaching Matters is a nonprofit organization that works with teachers in New York City schools to help improve their skills and effectiveness. Katie Campos, assistant secretary of education for New York State, will accept the award on Governor Cuomo's behalf.
"We applaud the Governor for making education reform a priority and for spearheading landmark legislation that will help teachers develop by providing clarity about what great teaching looks like and requires," says Lynette Guastaferro, executive director of Teaching Matters. "Evaluation done well—with teachers and not at them," she adds, "can transform education and greatly improve student outcomes; we appreciate Governor Cuomo's leadership on this critical matter."
The Champion of Education luncheon also will feature journalist Steven Brill who will discuss his book, Class Warfare: Inside the Fight to Fix America's Schools. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Elizabeth Rohatyn Fund, established in 2009 to support Teaching Matters' work developing and implementing school-based programs that improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement.
Founded by Elizabeth Rohatyn in 1994, Teaching Matters serves thousands of teachers and students in more than half of New York City's 1,700 public schools.
