Governor Corbett Orders Pennsylvania Flags to Fly at Half-Staff for Monroe County Shooting Victims

HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Tom Corbett today ordered Pennsylvania state flags at the Capitol Complex and at commonwealth facilities in Monroe County to fly at half-staff for three days, beginning Sunday, Aug. 11, in honor of the shooting victims in Monroe County.

Three men, James LaGuardia, Gerard Kozic and David Fleetwood, were killed and several others injured, when a gunman stormed into a township meeting Monday evening in Saylorsburg. The first funeral, for Fleetwood, is scheduled for Sunday.

"The incident in Monroe County strikes at the heart of America's tradition of hometown democracy,'' Corbett said. "Pennsylvania has lost three good citizens who were at a township meeting to exercise their constitutional right to self-government.

"Our system of local government is strong because there are so many more good people in our commonwealth who side with the rule of law over the violence of unreason.

"Our sympathy and prayers go out to the families of these three men, as well as all those recovering from injuries from this tragic event,'' Corbett said.

Pennsylvania flags, which have also been lowered until Wednesday evening in honor of the late Governor William W. Scranton, should fly at full-staff again on Thursday. The United States flag should remain flying at full-staff during this time.

All Pennsylvanians are authorized to join in this tribute.
