Governor Corbett Nominates Odelfa Smith Preston to Second Term on the State Civil Service Commission
HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Tom Corbett today announced he has nominated Odelfa Smith Preston of Pittsburgh to continue to serve on the Pennsylvania State Civil Service Commission, of which she has been a member since 2009.
"Commissioner Preston has earned the admiration and respect of leaders across the state, thanks to her diligence and commitment to putting Pennsylvanians back to work," Governor Corbett said. "I am confident Ms. Preston will continue to serve Pennsylvania with honor and distinction during her second term on the commission."
The State Civil Service Commission, a three-member, bipartisan, independent administrative agency, manages the Commonwealth's merit employment system, which covers approximately 58,000 employees in 38 state agencies and another 10,000 in more than 300 county and local government agencies.
"Commissioner Preston is a strong advocate for high quality public service and public servants," said House Democratic Leader Frank Dermody of Allegheny County. "She understands that Civil Service is about more than job placement and promotion, it's about helping thousands of people to build careers that elevate them and their families. I am delighted that she will continue to serve the state on the commission."
This nomination is subject to confirmation by the Pennsylvania Senate.
The commission administers tests for various civil service covered positions and compiles lists of eligible applicants, investigates allegations of violations of civil service regulations and holds hearings on appeals and other matters related to disputed personnel actions.
