Governor Corbett Issues Flag Order to Honor Fallen World War II Marine
HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Tom Corbett today ordered all U.S. and Pennsylvania flags in the Capitol Complex and at commonwealth facilities in Westmoreland County to fly at half-staff on Saturday, Sept. 15 to honor Marine Cpl. John D. Yeager, who died during World War II.
Cpl. Yeager's plane disappeared during a night training mission over an island in the South Pacific in April 1944. His remains were recently identified and returned to his family.
Yeager's family said he had volunteered for the Marines shortly after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. The New Kensington native was 23 when he died.
A funeral service will be held Saturday in his hometown, followed by burial in Lower Burrell.
All Pennsylvanians are invited to join in this tribute.
