Governor Corbett Addresses Postsecondary Education Commission

HARRISBURG, Pa., March 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Tom Corbett today welcomed the members of the Advisory Commission on Postsecondary Education as the panel began its first meeting.

"As we move forward in this new century, it is essential that we analyze ways to make higher education available, affordable and meaningful,'' Corbett said. "Pennsylvania is looking to you to explore all aspects of this challenge and work together to find solutions that will last years into the future.''

Rob Wonderling, chief executive officer of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and former state senator, is chairman of the 31-member commission. It will report back to Corbett by Nov. 15 with recommendations.

"As a commission, our focus is to develop a long-term framework for postsecondary education, working on behalf of the citizens of Pennsylvania to determine how we can make this great system even better to meet the demands of an increasingly global, technology-driven user," Wonderling said.

The commission has been asked to identify key issues and review current policies, procedures, regulations and legislation that impacts postsecondary education in Pennsylvania and develop long-range strategies. It will also evaluate trends in education, including the role of technology and how education can increase collaboration with the private sector and government.

Secretary of Education Ron Tomalis also addressed the commission this morning.

The commission, comprised of leaders in post secondary education and business, plans to hold several meetings in the upcoming months. The next meeting is scheduled for April 16 in Harrisburg.
