Government of Canada Supports the Essent ISU World Cup Speed Skating
CALGARY, Nov. 8, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to Speed Skating Canada in support of the Essent International Skating Union (ISU) World Cup Speed Skating at the Olympic Oval in Calgary. The event is being held from November 8 to 10, 2013.
"Once again this year, we are very proud to have the opportunity to cheer on our Canadian speed skaters who are world renowned for their successes and are consistently on the podium at World Cup events," said Minister of State Gosal. This event offers an opportunity for our athletes to race against other top skaters at Calgary's world-class facilities, while also bringing a welcome economic boost to the local community. That is why our Government is pleased to provide financial support to Speed Skating Canada for the 2013 Essent ISU World Cup Speed Skating."

Speed Skating Canada is the governing body for competitive long track and short track speed skating in Canada. Founded in 1887, the association comprises 13 provincial and territorial branches representing more than 13,000 individual members, and counting.
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. A contribution of $50,000 was provided to Speed Skating Canada through Sport Canada's Hosting Program for this event. The Government also provided nearly $3 million to Speed Skating Canada for 2013-2014 through the Sport Support Program. In 2012-2013, more than $1.1 million was provided through the Athlete Assistance Program to support 93 athletes with living and training expenses.
