Government Actions and Shipping Markets Are Redrawing the United States' Transportation Map With a New Focus on Intermodal, Reports The Journal of Commerce
NEWARK, N.J., May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite increasingly heated resistance from the trucking industry, there are moves in shipping markets to join government actions in redrawing the country's transportation map to focus on intermodal rail transport, making freight movement more efficient and greener, The Journal of Commerce reports in its May 24 cover story.

Support for multimodal projects, port infrastructure and passenger rail is growing – potentially sending far more of the country's goods onto trains and barges. Cost benefits are helping tip the scale as well; even with trucking rate slashes, the economy has pushed many shippers to already make the move to intermodal.
Although many invested in the traditional highway-heavy approach are resisting the changes, some see the potential inherent for all modes. "There will still be a (trucking) presence in long haul ... but we believe that intermodal will have a stronger presence over the long run to replace trucks from the highway, and the trucker's role will be more regionalized," said Chad Thomas, intermodal director for J.B. Hunt Transport Services.
This week's Cover Story examines the strategy shift to intermodal rail, motor carriers' concerns, equipment shortages already straining the system and current trends pointing to the inescapable rush to the rails.
