Governing Board Seeks New Member Nominations for 2011
Deadline for Submissions is September 30
WASHINGTON, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The national, bipartisan board that administers The Nation's Report Card -- which informs the public about student achievement nationwide in a number of core subjects -- is seeking nominations for seven positions.
The National Assessment Governing Board (www.nagb.org) is seeking public input to identify qualified candidates to serve a four-year term. Congress established the 26-member Governing Board to set policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as The Nation's Report Card.
"Because NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in various subject areas, future Board members will play an important role in shaping how our nation measures student achievement," said Governing Board Chairman David P. Driscoll.
The seven Board positions are designated for members in the following six categories:
Testing and Measurement Expert
Local School Superintendent
12th Grade Teacher
Curriculum Specialist (Two positions)
Chief State School Officer
State School Board Member
"With so many important education policy decisions on the horizon, we want members who are passionate and committed to finding ways to close the achievement gaps among U.S. students and significantly improve student performance overall to successfully compete with students around the world," Driscoll said.
Board member nominations are vetted for both qualifications and reflection of regional, racial, gender and cultural diversity. The Board meets four times a year and members serve as special Federal employees.
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan will make the appointments from a list of finalists. The term for each of the positions is October 1, 2011, to September 30, 2015.
To nominate an individual, submit a letter stating the nomination category and a description of the candidate's qualifications to meet the Board's policy responsibilities. Also submit a full resume or curriculum vitae.
The deadline for submitting nominations is September 30, 2010. Forward all materials via mail, e-mail or fax to:

The National Assessment Governing Board is an independent, bipartisan board whose members include governors, state legislators, local and state school officials, educators, business representatives, and members of the general public. Congress created the 26-member Governing Board in 1988 to oversee and set policy for NAEP.
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the only nationally representative, continuing evaluation of the condition of education in the United States. It has served as a national yardstick of student achievement since 1969. Through The Nation's Report Card, NAEP informs the public about what America's students know and can do in various subject areas, and compares achievement between states, large urban districts, and various student demographic groups.
