LOS ANGELES, June 2, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Los Angeles dentist Dr. Baruch Twersky at Wilshire Smile Studio states that many of his new patients do not realize they suffer from Temporomandibular Joint disorder, often referred to as TMJ or TMD.
To learn more about TMJ or to schedule an appointment, visit www.TMJDoctorLosAngeles.com.
This joint connects the lower jaw to the skull and can be felt just below the ears. Stress causes the jaw to clench, leading to its displacement. The individual usually hears a clicking or popping sound when opening the mouth and may experience jaw pain. Other causes can include poorly matched bite between the lower and upper jaw, missing teeth, arthritis, and head or neck injuries, including whiplash.
"Our L.A. TMJ dentists have confirmed what the insurance provider Delta Dental found, that about 15% of Americans have symptoms of TMJ. The most common is grinding of the teeth at night and others may include the joint locking up, limited ability to open the mouth, pain when it is fully open, frequent unexplained headaches, tooth pain, soreness when chewing, swelling around the joint, ear aches or ringing in the ears, sore facial muscles, neck or shoulder discomfort, or dizziness."
Los Angeles dentist Dr. Twersky also reports that there are many ways to relieve TMJ symptoms including:
- A dental appliance can be custom-made to fit in the mouth and relax the muscles connected to the joint, without interfering with the ability to talk.
- A custom night guard can prevent grinding of teeth that can lead to TMJ.
- Crowns, bridges, dental implants, or orthodontic treatment may be required to allow the upper and lower teeth to fit together properly.
- Neuromuscular techniques can be used to move the jaw, muscles, or tissues into their proper places.
- Chiropractic manipulation of the neck can relieve stress.
- Hot and cold compresses can relax muscles.
- Medication may reduce pain and swelling.
- In extreme cases, oral surgery may be necessary.
