Gorman Wins National Student Chef Competition
ASHEVILLE, N.C., Aug. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Daniel Gorman, a 2007 Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College Culinary Technology graduate, was named National Student Chef of the Year at the American Culinary Federation's (ACF) national convention Aug. 5 in Anaheim, CA.
Competitors had two hours and 10 minutes to prepare, cook and serve a two-course meal or dessert using a basket of selected ingredients, including chicken, shrimp, trout, clams, potatoes and leeks. Gorman represented the Southeast Region after winning that competition in April.
"I think the building blocks of all my competition background started at A-B Tech," Gorman said. "I have mentors who have supported me, but the base of it all came from A-B Tech and my instructors still continually give me backup and check in with me."
In order to qualify as a student chef, competitors have to be 22 or under years old and within three years of their membership in the Junior ACF.
Gorman created a pan-roasted trout with steamed clams and a salad for his first course. "I think it was the best dish I ever made. That was my baby," he said.
The second course he prepared had chicken stuffed with oysters and mushrooms, with potatoes and southern-style green beans.
Gorman was a member of the 2007 A-B Tech Culinary team, which won the national ACF student team championship. He is a line cook at Cherokee Town and Country Club in Atlanta.
"Daniel has worked very hard for the past four years, competing on two A-B Tech student teams and winning regional competitions. We are so proud of him," said Charles deVries, Hospitality Education instructor and coach of the College's Culinary Team.
