SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Good Technology™, the leader in secure mobility, today announced key findings from the Q1 2014 Good™ Mobility Index Report. This quarter, as organizations declared security as a top IT concern in 2014, the data shows a monumental increase in activations of more complex secure enterprise apps, most notably secure browsing.
The data reported in this quarter's Mobility Index Report shows that the organizations across Good's diverse customer base are taking steps to mitigate security risks by leveraging secure mobile enterprise apps. Overall, secure enterprise app activations continued to see an impressive growth rate at 57 percent quarter over quarter, up from 54 percent and 43 percent growth from the last two quarters, respectively. This is not surprising given recent data from the 2014 State of Endpoint Risk report published by The Ponemon Institute which highlights that within the IT environment, mobility and third party applications pose the greatest security risks. In a survey of IT and IT security practitioners with involvement in endpoint security, 75 percent of respondents noted mobile devices, such as smartphones, represent the greatest risk of potential IT security risk, followed by the increase in the risk associated with third party applications.[1]
The total number of secure browsing app activations across Good's customer base skyrocketed this quarter by 2900 percent, boosting it to the fifth most-activated app category, despite not making the top 10 in previous quarters. With the introduction of new secure browsing apps, such as Good Access into the Good-secured ecosystem, organizations are taking full advantage of the ability to securely and seamlessly provide VPN-less access to their enterprise data.
Organizations also continue to invest in secure custom app development to mobilize business processes and drive efficiencies, leveraging the Good Dynamics Secure Mobility Platform and the same industry-leading security framework used to build the third party apps they are deploying. Custom app activations grew 77 percent quarter over quarter, a significant jump in the 55 percent growth reported in Q4 2013. Other app categories that saw notable growth of over 100 percent quarter over quarter include mobile printing, notes and mobile unified communications, highlighting the growing trend of organizations moving beyond tasks like document editing and management and supplementing their mobile app strategies with more advanced, sophisticated apps.
"Security is at the heart of every conversation we're having with customers, and this quarter more than ever, we're seeing the data reflect the significant investment they are making to keep their data secure," said Christy Wyatt, CEO and President of Good Technology. "Productivity, collaboration, efficiency… these can only be realized when mobility is coupled with security. Organizations are seeing there's no room, or reason, to compromise on one or the other."
From a device perspective, platform activations held steady quarter over quarter with iOS reporting 72 percent of total device activations in Q1 and Android activations increasing one percentage point quarter over quarter, for 27 percent of total device activations.
Additional report findings include:
- Tablets recorded twice the number of enterprise app activations versus smartphones this quarter, likely attributed to form factor.
- Insurance emerged as a strong new industry category, and recorded 12 percent of total device activations as well as 11 percent of iPad activations.
- Other new categories that emerged in the top 10 for total iPad activations were High Tech and Energy & Utilities.
