LOS ANGELES, July 23, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Good Samaritan Hospital and the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology have formed a new affiliation. The USC Neuroscience Center at Good Samaritan Hospital has been established to bring the talents of the USC neurosurgeons, neuro-interventionalists, neuro-oncologists, and neurologists to the Good Samaritan Hospital campus. The program will include both inpatient care and outpatient consultation focusing on intracranial tumors, spinal procedures, neuro-oncology, stroke and other vascular conditions.
This affiliation will further enhance Good Samaritan Hospital's ability to diagnose and treat patients with brain, spinal, and peripheral nerve disorders. The program has the ability to treat some of the most complex cases, including brain tumors, arteriovenous malformations, complex spinal surgery, movement/functional disorders, trigeminal neuralgia and other neurologic conditions. It will integrate with several well-known existing Good Samaritan Hospital programs, including the gamma knife, spine surgery, and peripheral nerve disorders.
The affiliation also provides the USC Department of Neurosurgery with access to referrals from a busy community hospital emergency department and a channel for referrals of patients with complex conditions best treated in an academic medical center.
"The Good Samaritan affiliation brings the best of both worlds into one location: convenience of a community hospital, with the expertise of the university hospital," said Thomas C. Chen, MD, PhD., director of the USC/Norris Neuro-Oncology Program and a tenured professor of the Neurological Surgery and Pathology at the USC Keck School of Medicine. Dr. Chen is the director of the USC Neuroscience Program at Good Samaritan.
