SAN DIEGO, April 17, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Gomez Trial Attorneys, in partnership with Newsome Melton and Holzberg Legal, is filing a civil lawsuit against Costa Cruise Line on behalf of James and Kelea Nevis, two passengers who contracted COVID-19 while aboard the Costa Luminosa. The couple, whose harrowing ordeal was featured by the New York Times, both contracted the disease while on board the ship, causing intense suffering that nearly cost James his life. The Nevis family are seeking justice by filing a personal injury lawsuit against Costa Cruise Line in the Southern District of Florida.

The lawsuit contends that the Costa Cruise Line made the decision to proceed with the Costa Luminosa's voyage on February 24, 2020, knowing that other cruise ships were already experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks aboard their ships, prioritizing profit over passenger safety. Further, as set forth in the complaint, the Costa Cruise Line was woefully unprepared for an outbreak on its ship, and even concealed from passengers that someone on the Costa Luminosa had symptoms of coronavirus necessitating medical evacuation. Costa Cruise Line failed to timely order passengers on the Costa Luminosa to isolate in their staterooms, kept profit-rich onboard amenities open such as bars and casinos, while serving food and drink to passengers without personal protective equipment (PPE). In doing so, the Costa Cruise Line subjected the Costa Luminosa's 2,000 passengers and crew to COVID-19 and the actual risk of immediate physical injury and/or death.
