JACKSON, Miss. and BOSTON, Oct. 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Cengage has committed $12,000 to support Phi Theta Kappa's newest scholarship program that will put membership in reach for more community college students across the country.
The Golden Opportunity Scholarship is the Society's first to help prospective members cover the cost of the one-time membership fee. Three hundred scholarships will be granted through the generosity of Cengage, Phi Theta Kappa members, advisors, alumni, corporate donors and friends. Read more about the scholarship.
"While Phi Theta Kappa members have very similar financial and academic struggles as other community college students, they dramatically outperform other community college students in completion and transfer outcomes," said Phi Theta Kappa President and CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner. "Fewer than 40 percent of America's community college students earn a degree of any kind within six years of beginning college, but the completion and transfer success of a Phi Theta Kappa member is 92 percent — so membership opens the door to substantial opportunities in terms of college completion and scholarships."
The scholarship program will open twice a year. Three hundred scholarships will be given in this initial year, and plans are in place to expand the program and offer more scholarships in the years to come.
The Golden Opportunity Scholarship will waive international membership fees, which are $60 per student. Recipients will still be responsible for chapter and regional membership fees, which vary but average $25 total.
