"Retail credit cards don't have the best reputation; in fact, they're notorious for having high interest rates," said Christina Lavingia, a GOBankingRates editor. "But around the holidays, when the amount Americans spend on retail skyrockets, store cards can make surprisingly good tools. If you choose the right card and use it strategically, you can build your credit, save money on your holiday shopping and access a host of rewards."
Additional findings:
- Among the top 10 store cards, Nordstrom, Barnes & Noble and Costco offer the lowest interest rates.
- Target won the distinction of "best rewards" for offering a 5 percent discount on all in-store and online purchases.
- Best Buy came out on top with the best financing option for its deferred interest program.
