GO Group Says St. Patrick's Day is more than Parades and Green Beer
CHICAGO, Feb. 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Typically, St. Patrick's Day celebrations include parades, pub crawls and other shenanigans. But the travel experts at The GO Group say "fun runs," scheduled in most GO cities across the country, are a healthier way to celebrate the saint who banished snakes from Ireland. Following are a few of our favorites:
A South Boston tradition since 1940, the annual 5K Road Race will be held on March 20 at 11 a.m. The race starts and ends at the newly renovated, historic Edgerley Family South Boston Boys & Girls Club, which benefits from the event's proceeds. While the course is not certified, there are several hills that add to the challenge. The event kicks off with a performance by pop-band Harmaniacs.
Those looking to atone for St. Patrick's Day sins can participate in Chicago's annual Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K on April 3. The 37th annual race offers a one-of-a-kind course that weaves its way through Chicago's Loop, starting and finishing in Grant Park. Each runner gets a ticket for a free beer at the post-race party at The Scout Waterhouse & Kitchen.
Running enthusiasts who love history will like New York's Irish History Running Tour held on March 13 and 20. Join City Running Tours and experience the city's rich Irish history with stops including the Irish Hunger Memorial, Five Points, Little Ireland, McSorley's and more.
There's something for everyone at Seattle's 32nd St. Patrick's Day Dash on March 13. The family-oriented, intergenerational event features costumed athletes of all levels and ages, with kids racing for the finish line and adults racing for the beer garden. The 5k event starts and finishes at Seattle Center, winding through downtown Seattle. In addition to the beer garden, the Post Dash Bash features live music, giveaways and a costume contest. All proceeds benefit the Detlef Schrempf Foundation.
If you haven't had enough snow this winter, head to Vail for the fifth annual Krueger Family Shamrock Shuffle Snow Shoe Race on March 12. There will be 5k, 10k and a kid's 1k runs with race categories for snowshoes, Yaktrax (cleated walkers) and running shoes. All races begin at 4 p.m. and are followed by a post-race party at the Vail Nature Center featuring a bonfire, hot chocolate and s'mores. Snowshoe rentals will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
