BOSTON, March 25, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Globalization Partners Inc, a company that helps other companies engage global teams without establishing overseas subsidiaries, today announced it is funding the construction of a new school in rural Guatemala and sending ten high school students from disadvantaged communities across the U.S. to participate in the actual construction process of the new school. The intention is to bring quality education to local children in rural Guatemala while also expanding the worldview of American high school students from disadvantaged communities. The project is in partnership with School the World, a Boston-based international nonprofit.
"Globalization Partners' mission is to break down barriers to global business by making it easy for our clients to hire global team members in more than 150 countries," said Nicole Sahin, CEO of Globalization Partners. "This project with School the World embodies our company's spirit and dedication to that goal. By collapsing the obstacles to education, progress is made not only within a community, but a region, a country, and the world. We can't wait to start building!"
The ten American high school students were chosen from traditionally underserved communities in the U.S. to travel to Guatemala to participate in this service-learning trip. According to the United Nations World Food Programme and the World Bank, 58 percent of Guatemalans live in poverty—and while the UN reports about 85 percent of seven-to-twelve-year-olds attend school, nearly 1.5 million children do not have access to an education.
The American students will have an opportunity to see and learn about the deep and complicated causes underlying economic disadvantages prevalent in rural communities. They will be able to witness first-hand the economic realities that families in indigenous areas of Central America contend with in their determination to educate and take care of their families. More importantly, the American high school students will experience the opportunity to make a difference and see the power and influence of education in ordinary people's lives.
"Throughout this trip the students will learn about the realities of extreme poverty and meet children who love to learn," said Kate Curran, Founder & CEO of School the World. "They will get to know a community that understands the power of education and is incredibly grateful for the new school and all the opportunities it will bring."
In addition to scholarships for the students, Globalization Partners is funding the school build, and employees will also be donating a significant portion of the school supplies. School the World will be documenting the journey of the 10 students on social media from March 25-30. To see daily photos and videos please visit @schooltheworld on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram!
