ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Lansinoh, a global leader in the breastfeeding market, revealed several noteworthy trends that were uncovered in their 2017 National Breastfeeding Survey of new and expecting moms.
Lansinoh surveyed over 2,000 US moms and nearly 13,000 moms globally to better understand the views of mothers and mothers-to-be about breastfeeding and pumping. Participants were asked a wide range of questions about the breastfeeding experience, including breastfeeding fears and challenges, their views on breastfeeding in public, how support from others affects the experience, and the impact of maternity leave on breastfeeding.
Key findings from the survey include:
- Moms revealed the most challenging places to nurse are:
- While shopping (26%)
- While traveling (26%)
- At work (12%)
- The top three fears breastfeeding moms have:
- Baby won't latch on (28%)
- Baby is breastfeeding less than the time recommended by healthcare providers (17%)
- That breastfeeding will hurt too much (13%)
- 89% of moms think breastfeeding is the best way to feed their baby
- 87% of moms rated "health benefits for baby" as the #1 reason to breastfeed
- 40% of moms agreed instant access to lactation support would be helpful
- 40% of moms have used breastfeeding products or services provided by the Affordable Care Act
- 65% of moms said breastfeeding in public is "perfectly natural", but 20% have been openly criticized for breastfeeding in public
- 8 in 10 women stated that maternity leave had a positive impact on their breastfeeding journey
"More than ever, moms are embracing breastfeeding because of the health benefits for baby. While it can be a rewarding way to bond with and nourish baby, it does not always come easily. But with the right preparation, education, and support moms are far more likely to achieve their breastfeeding goals," explains Gina Cicatelli Ciagne, Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), and Lansinoh's Vice President of Integrated Marketing and Clinical Communications. "Lansinoh encourages new and expecting moms to seek the support they need and to support one another so every mom has a fulfilling breastfeeding experience."
