Global Industry Leaders Convened at NaviForum Shanghai 2010 / ITS Shanghai, COMPASS Becomes Industry Focal Point
SHANGHAI, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- The NaviForum Shanghai 2010 / ITS Shanghai, organized by the Department of High and New Technology Development and Industrialization, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the China Second-Generation Satellite Navigation System Project Management Office and Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, began in Shanghai on September 1, 2010. Participants include government officials, well-known Chinese and foreign speakers and hundreds of industry experts. The forum includes interactive discussions, exhibitions and lectures by a diverse field of industry experts. As critical components of the modern high-tech service industry, intelligent transportation and satellite navigation are constantly developing trends with irreplaceable functionalities. The organizers hope that the forum will promote the rapid development and organization of the industry.
Satellite navigation and positioning systems, regarded as the nation's foundation of information and strategic resources, will significantly affect the progress of civilization, human life and our concept of time and space. As an emerging strategic industry, China's navigation and positioning industry has enjoyed robust growth in recent years. Since January, China has consecutively launched several satellites with the BeiDou, or COMPASS, navigation system network satellite, which was independently developed by China and has seen steady progress through a "three-step" strategy. During the past several years, a number of civilian and commercial applications of COMPASS have emerged. The rapid rise in car sales coupled with a large-scale implementation of the COMPASS network should result in a high growth period for China's satellite navigation and positioning industry in the next few years. The Shanghai Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance for Satellite and Positioning Industry was established in June 2010, to advance industry understanding of the satellite navigation terminal and its related services, build a location-based services platform and promote the construction of digital Shanghai.
NaviForum is in its fourth session since its debut in 2004 and is now recognized as the most important gathering of the satellite navigation sector in China. In contrast to the past, this forum is presented together with the International ITS Conference and Expo Shanghai 2010. With the theme of "New Generation of Satellite Navigation System and Application of Innovative Navigation Technologies," the forum first establishes a broader platform for participants to exchange ideas through a new model that combines the forum with an exhibition.
As the largest developing country stepping into this age of information, China has become the third country, after the U.S. and Russia, to have an independently developed satellite navigation system. China's steady progress on the COMPASS strategy has attracted major attention from the global industry. Ran Chengqi, director of the China Second-Generation Satellite Navigation System Project Management Office, and members of the Chinese satellite navigation team are participating in the forum in order to address the industry's future development in China, the service and performance requirements of satellite navigation and the development possibilities created through alliances. Jeff Auerbach, advisor on GNSS Affairs for the Office of Space and Advanced Technology at the U.S. Department of State, is also attending the forum to speak on issues relating to GPS and Worldwide GNSS Interoperability. He will be accompanied by Anthony Russo, director of the U.S. National Coordination Office for Space-Based Positioning, Navigation and Timing, who will give a presentation on GPS Constellation and Modernization Plans and Policy.
Other guests include Glen Gibbons, editor and publisher of Inside GNSS, who will host the highly interactive session "Driving Force for GNSS Development in North America." The session has attracted major attention because of its esteemed list of participants: Kanwar Chadha, Chief Marketing Officer of CSR; Dr. Cormac Conroy, Vice President of Engineering at Qualcomm; Mike Shaw, Director of Navigation Systems Global Business Development at Lockheed Martin Corporation; and Donminique Bonte, Practice Director of Telematics and Navigation at ABI Research.
Real-time traffic information services are an important area of development, an irreplaceable component in the advancement of the intelligent transportation industry, an extension of the positioning and navigation services and a dream for many navigation users. In the interactive real-time traffic information service discussion session, industry pioneers, including Shanghai Meihui Software Co., Ltd. and RealTraffic Info-Tech Co., Ltd., will conduct in-depth comparisons and discussions, both vertical and horizontal, on the current state and future development of real-time traffic information services in China. They will share experiences and lessons as well as search for a sound and rapid development path for the industry.
The NaviForum is held during the Shanghai World Expo. The opening of the Shanghai World Expo has brought both challenges and opportunities to China's navigation and intelligent transportation industries. The Chinese government announced that it will complete the deployment of the COMPASS navigation system by the year 2020. The special topic of the COMPASS satellite navigation's application at the Shanghai World Expo, as well as the low-carbon travel program presented by Deutsche Telecom, resonates considerably well with the forum's participants.
During the Forum, participants will visit the International ITS Conference & Expo Shanghai 2010, which is also held at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre, where over 70 leading companies from seven nations and regions -- Germany, Holland, U.S., U.K., Japan, mainland China, and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of PRC -- have showcased intelligent transportation technologies and products, satellite navigation, geographical information, automobile electronic software and information service, parking equipment, parking management and control systems. This new model of a combined forum and exhibition has resulted in an unprecedented event for the intelligent transportation and navigation sector.
This year is the final year of the government's "Eleventh Five-year Plan," and a critical time in the development of the "Twelfth Five-year Plan." The future of the industry depends on a correct understanding of the opportunities and challenges presented by the Chinese satellite navigation and positioning industry, and people must seize these opportunities and overcome challenges in order to accelerate the development of the satellite navigation and positioning industry during the "Twelfth Five-year Plan." Currently, the government is vigorously promoting the revitalization of the "Ten Industries" plan and "Internet of Things" construction, which will certainly be included in the "Twelfth Five-year Plan." The "Ten Industries" revitalization plan and the "Internet of Things" construction are closely related to the satellite navigation and positioning industry. With the imminent implementation of the new "Five-year Plan," the satellite navigation and positioning industry must mark a clear path, with clear tasks and identifiable gaps, for accelerated development.
