"Artein," the Scots Gaelic for "stone," is an intriguing 15 Years Old Glenmorangie, extra matured in 'Super Tuscan' wine casks. Extra Maturation of whisky in wine casks is an innovative approach created by the renowned Dr. Bill Lumsden. The rugged and stony coastal hills of Tuscany, though a seemingly improbable area for vineyards, contain mineral rich terrain which gives these special wines their unique taste. The house characteristics of Glenmorangie were a perfect match for the 'Super Tuscan' casks since stone has also played a significant role in Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch Whisky thanks to its limestone rich hard water source, the Tarlogie Springs.
Dr. Bill Lumsden and Chef Colicchio both spoke about pairing whiskies with food and elaborated on the richness of each other's creations and the subsequent inspiration for the evening's meal. The guests were then treated to a five-course dinner menu, created specially by Chef Colicchio for the occasion. The pairings included the Venison entrée with huckleberry sauce that played magnificently with the fruitier notes of the Glenmorangie Artein single malt.
"We were honored to have our Master Distiller, Dr. Bill Lumsden, here to share with us the story of Glenmorangie Artein and we were equally privileged to have Chef Tom Colicchio host this launch in his amazing restaurant, Colicchio & Sons." commented Brian Cox, VP Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
One of the most celebrated culinary figures in the country, Chef Tom Colicchio has received five James Beard Foundation Medals, and is the proprietor of some of New York's most highly regarded restaurants, such as Craft and of course Colicchio & Sons. His Las Vegas restaurant, Craftsteak, also boasts what is thought by many to be the most complete Single Malt whisky collection in the U.S.
Glenmorangie Artein is the latest addition to the ongoing Private Edition series, which consists of rare and interesting limited edition whiskies, such as the highly esteemed Sonnalta PX and Finealta. Glenmorangie Artein is now available in the U.S., this February 2012, but only while limited stocks last.
