NAPERVILLE, Ill., Feb. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies, has received the 2010 Environmental Stewardship Award from Nalco Company (NYSE: NLC) in recognition of GSK's ongoing efforts to reduce its climate change impact and energy and water use.

The Environmental Stewardship Award recognizes exceptional performance in achieving sustainability objectives and financial goals. "The award targets global enterprises that set aggressive environmental commitments," said Emilio Tenuta, Nalco's Director of Sustainability. "In addition, it recognizes companies that go beyond measuring performance and embrace a mindset of continuous improvement to help achieve or surpass their targets by leveraging the partnerships of experts in the industry."
In 2006, GSK set targets to reduce its water consumption by 2 percent per year by 2010. By 2009, water consumption had been decreased 15 percent, significantly exceeding those goals. In addition, in 2007 GSK launched a climate change program for its operations, setting targets to reduce energy use by 45 percent per unit of sales by 2015, using 2006 figures as a benchmark.
Richard Pamenter, Vice President and Head of GSK's Environmental Sustainability Centre of Excellence said, "GSK is pleased to receive this award from Nalco as it reinforces our commitment to environmental sustainability, which is essential to our role as a good corporate citizen. It makes business sense too. If we continue to develop these relationships – with Nalco, for example – and establish others, we will continue to show how GSK is focused on doing the right thing."
The annual Environmental Return on Investment (eROI) that GSK has achieved from using Nalco's sustainable solutions includes:
- more than 325,000 cubic meters (85.8 million gallons) of water savings, enough for the annual water needs of nearly 3,400 people,
- 4.1 million kWh of energy savings, equal to 147 households annual use, and
- 2,000 metric tonnes of CO2 reduction, equal to more than 83,000 trees.
These environmental improvements also resulted in financial savings for GSK of more than pounds Sterling 1.3 million since 2008.
The award selection committee included Nalco representatives and input from the Water Innovation Alliance (WIA).
