"Glassdoor's Employees' Choice Awards recognize stand-out companies that have retained the support and commitment of their employees despite the tough economic climate," said Robert Hohman, co-founder and CEO of Glassdoor. "Through anonymous employee reviews and surveys, Glassdoor offers a unique look into the top U.S. employers and some of the factors that make employees at these companies more satisfied with their jobs. For companies on the list, we typically get positive feedback on the company culture, benefits and open communication practices while we also tend to see competitive pay packages and high opinions of the chief executive."
Social network giant Facebook led the pack this year with a 4.6 overall company rating based on a five-point scale while CEO Mark Zuckerberg earned a 96 percent approval rating from his employees.
"We're thrilled to be recognized as the best place to work among the distinguished companies on the list," said Lori Goler, vice president of human resources at Facebook. "At Facebook, every person can have a meaningful impact, and people are empowered to move fast, take risks, and build bold and innovative things. We're thankful people have embraced this freedom to do great things for Facebook and the people who use Facebook around the world."
Southwest Airlines, which topped the 2010 list, is second in 2011 with a 4.4 company rating and CEO Gary C. Kelly has a 95 percent approval rating. The remaining top five include Bain & Company with a 4.3 rating (Steve Ellis has a 99 percent approval rating), General Mills at a 4.0 rating (Ken Powell has a 100 percent approval rating) and Edelman with a 4.0 rating (Richard Edelman has a 93 percent approval rating).
Glassdoor's Employees' Choice Awards rely solely on the input of employees, who provide constructive feedback on their work environment and senior management throughout the year via an anonymous survey. The survey addresses eight key workplace factors that include work/life balance, career opportunities, communication, compensation and benefits, fairness and respect, employee morale, recognition and feedback, and senior leadership. The ranking of the top 50 list was determined by each company's overall Glassdoor rating, which is the cumulative average rating from employees who elected to participate in a 20-question survey between December 1, 2009 and December 1, 2010.
