Girl Scouts Unveils Girls Scouts of the USA Centennial Silver Dollar
DALLAS, Sept. 22, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) today unveiled the United States Mint's designs for a commemorative coin honoring 100 years of Girl Scouting. It will feature three Girl Scouts on the obverse (heads) side and the iconic organization's trefoil logo on the reverse (tails) side.
"It is a beautiful coin that truly honors our 100-year legacy," said GSUSA National President Connie L. Lindsey. "During our centennial, we've declared 2012 as the Year of the Girl and this commemorative coin is a wonderful way to celebrate girls and Girl Scouting, as well as our 59 million alumnae and the contributions they have made to our nation."
The coin comes amid a year marked by Girl Scout centennial celebrations across the country from Savannah, Ga., where the organization began in 1912, to Washington, D.C., and beyond. Indeed, the Girl Scouts of the USA Centennial Silver Dollar was unveiled before hundreds of supporters of Girl Scouts at a special dinner here in advance of the opening of the National Girl Scout Centennial Exhibition at the State Fair of Texas.
The bills authorizing the United States Mint to mint and issue up to 350,000 of the silver dollar coins passed unanimously in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate in October 2009. President Obama signed the legislation on October 29, 2009.
"The United States Mint only issues two commemorative coin programs a year, so we're thrilled," said Girl Scouts of the USA CEO Anna Maria Chávez. "It's exciting and quite a distinction. Girl Scouts has touched the lives of so many girls and women and we'd like to thank everyone who supported us in the process of making this coin a reality."
The observe, or heads, side of the coin depicts three girls of different ages and backgrounds. It was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Progam (AIP) Master Designer Barbara Fox. The inscriptions include COURAGE, CONFIDENCE, CHARACTER, which are part of the Girl Scouts mission statement to "build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place." The design also includes the Girl Scouts' 100th anniversary logo.
The reverse of the coin was designed by United States Mint AIP Associate Designer Chris Costello. It features the Girl Scouts trefoil logo, and the inscriptions on the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, GIRL SCOUTS, E PLURIBUS UNUM and $1.
The coin will be available for sale starting in early 2013. A surcharge from the sale of each coin is authorized to be paid to Girl Scouts for national program development and delivery.
