PARK CITY, Utah, Jan. 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Girl Rising, the new feature film from Academy Award nominated director Richard E. Robbins, today releases its theatrical trailer: http://girlrising.com/trailer.
The film, which premieres on March 7, 2013, previewed last night at the Sundance Film Festival, during an event hosted by strategic partner, Intel, with special guests Freida Pinto and Edwidge Danticat. For event photos, email [email protected].
Girl Rising spotlights the stories of nine unforgettable girls born into unforgiving circumstances. Narrated by Cate Blanchett, Priyanka Chopra, Selena Gomez, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, Chloe Moretz, Liam Neeson, Frieda Pinto, Meryl Streep, and Kerry Washington, the movie is the centerpiece of 10x10 – a global campaign to educate and empower girls.
"With Girl Rising, I wanted to make a beautiful film that met three distinct goals: change minds, change lives, and change policy, around educating girls," said director, Richard E. Robbins. "The stories of these amazing girls are at once very typical and totally extraordinary. The response at Sundance was everything we could have hoped for."
"Girl Rising gives me hope," said actress Freida Pinto. "It gives me hope for the future of our girls, that they will have a chance to explore and achieve their full potential. That they will make the ignorant part of society value their existence and that they will be proud to be born a Girl!"
From the award-winning producers of The Documentary Group and Vulcan Productions, with strategic partner Intel Corporation and global television distribution partner CNN Films, Girl Rising journeys around the globe to witness the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change a girl – and the world.
"At the most fundamental level, Intel believes if we can educate and empower a girl, she will become a change agent for innovation and economic development," said Shelly Esque, vice president of Intel's Corporate Affairs Group and president of the Intel Foundation. "Major change requires the kind of empathy that good storytelling elicits. It's here in 10x10's Girl Rising, and we hope it will help millions of girls get educated and change the world."
Each girl's story is written by a renowned writer from her native country: Marie Arana, Edwidge Danticat, Mona Eltahawy, Aminatta Forna, Zarghuna Kargar, Maaza Mengiste, Sooni Taraporevala, Manjushree Thapa, and Loung Ung.
"We want to make the public aware of how educating girls has a profound impact on communities, and also get them fired up to do something about it," said Bonnie Benjamin-Phariss, Director of Vulcan Productions. "Our hope is that the film and campaign will drive change and, as a result, help young women all around the world."
Girl Rising will premiere in New York, Washington, DC, and Los Angeles, and on demand in hundreds of cities across the country. Theatrical distribution platform, Gathr, empowers people everywhere to follow a few simple steps to crowdsource Girl Rising into movie theaters across the nation.
"The response to Girl Rising at Sundance confirms what we felt: this is a powerful, beautiful and important film about the world-changing power of educating girls," said Holly Gordon, Executive Director of 10x10. "The call to action is clear. Watch the trailer, feel inspired, step up and then sign up to host a screening of Girl Rising in your local movie theater. Transformative change happens community by community and everyone should be a part of this revolution."
A portion of Girl Rising ticket sales will go to support girls' programs around the world through the 10x10 Fund for Girls' Education. The Fund goes to 10x10's high-impact network of non-profit partners and leaders in girls' education: A New Day Cambodia, CARE, Girl Up/United Nations Foundation, Partners in Health, Plan International USA, Room to Read, UNICEF, and World Vision.
