Giant Food of Landover, MD Informs Customers About Voluntary Recall of Products Containing Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein

LANDOVER, Md., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- There is currently a comprehensive voluntary recall underway by manufacturers that used a flavor enhancer found in processed foods called Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) due to the possibility of Salmonella contamination. Only HVP from Basic Food Flavors, Inc. is associated with this recall.

To date, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received no reports of illness associated with consumption of products containing HVP, but manufacturers are recalling products that contain HVP from Basic Food Flavors and that do not require thorough cooking before consumption.

Customers who have purchased the affected products should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to their store for a full refund.

Salmonella is the name of a group of bacteria and is the most common cause of food poisoning in the United States. Symptoms of salmonella food poisoning include abdominal cramps, diarrhea and fever that develop 12 to 72 hours after infection. Thorough cooking to 170 degrees can kill salmonella. Consumers who experience any of the symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning should contact their health care professional immediately.
