LANDOVER, Md., Nov. 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Giant Food of Landover, Md. announced today that all 167 Giant Landover store locations will participate in the "Food 4 Families" holiday food drive that will involve multiple efforts at store level and beyond to help hungry families in our community.
Giant Food stores will be collecting nonperishable items through November 23rd to be donated to five area Feeding America food banks: Capital Area Food Bank, Maryland Food Bank, Food Bank of Delaware, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank. Items accepted include canned vegetables, canned fruits, canned tuna, salmon or chicken, grains, peanut butter and more.
Each Giant Food location will also be selling prepacked Nature's Promise meal boxes that customers can purchase for $10 each. Containing nourishing organic and free-from products such as whole wheat pasta, canned corn, and canned black beans, customers can donate the boxes they purchase to the local Feeding America branches.
According to Capital Area Food Bank, 700,000 individuals in the Washington metro area are at risk of hunger. Local area food banks have relied on Giant Food and its generous customers for over 35 years to help fill their pantry shelves before the holidays.
"The holidays should be a time of joy for everyone. The 'Food 4 Families' drive is a way we can bring our community together to support those facing hunger and food insecurity this holiday season," says Gordon Reid, President, Giant of Landover, Md. "We have a longstanding partnership with our area food banks and look forward to helping them serve our community."
Food 4 Families is being conducted in partnership with NBC4, Monumental Sports & Entertainment, WTOP Radio, NBC Sports Washington and Radio One.
"We're very excited about expanding NBC4's Food 4 Families campaign in this partnership with Giant Food this year," said Jackie Bradford, NBC4 President & General Manager. In partnership with Monumental Sports & Entertainment, Giant Food is also encouraging Washington Capitals fans to donate a nonperishable item of their choice during the November 18th Washington Capitals game taking place at the Capital One Arena. With each donation, supporters will receive a free poster.
