Get Youth Involved This May for Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month
DENVER, May 4, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 is fast approaching, and the field of historic preservation is working to inspire the next generation of preservationists, archaeologists, planners, architects, and like-minded citizens for the next 50 years of historic preservation in America.
May is Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month (AHPM)! To both celebrate the achievements of youth in preservation and encourage new people to get involved with preservation, the theme for this year is "History in the Making: Celebrating Youth in Preservation."
"Now is a terrific time to involve young people in celebrating and preserving the heritage of our communities," says Steve Turner, Colorado's Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer. "Join us during Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month this May by adding your organization's events to our online calendar and getting involved in your community."
The newly designed calendar is easy to use and allows for increased publicity of your AHPM events. To add an event, visit h-co.org/PostYourEvent.
Get youth involved in Colorado preservation by encouraging them to register for the Preserve America Youth Summit! This summer, the Youth Summit will be traveling in Colorado, Arizona and Texas to engage young people in the significance of preserving historic places. The program, funded in part by the History Colorado State Historical Fund, is open to middle and high school students who are accepted through a competitive scholarship process. Visit preservationyouthsummit.org for more information and to apply online.
On May 11 and 13 History Colorado will partner with National Park Media Trips, Great Outdoors Colorado, Xanterra Parks & Resorts, Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources, Colorado Newspapers in Education, and Visit Estes Park to host 1,000 students and teachers at the History Colorado Center. The programs will engage students in historic preservation activities, expand the accessibility of tools to support teacher efforts in heritage and preservation education, and bolster local preservation values.
