Germany Targets Water Efficiency in Agribusiness
New R&D Incentives Available Through May
BERLIN, March 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Germany has set its sights on water efficiency in agriculture and food production. With the introduction of generous new research and development incentives, Germany is supporting projects contributing to the reduction of water consumption in the food supply chain. Germany Trade & Invest supports international companies and researchers seeking R&D funding and business opportunities in this field.
With an industry that generates revenue of EUR 35 billion annually, Germany is a specialist in sustainable water technologies and features the world's highest export share of 19 percent for these technologies.
German research and development in water technology leads Europe, with more patents registered in this field than any other country except the USA. The German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection has recently announced the latest incentive program for this field, namely its innovation program for the efficient and sustainable management of water resources in agriculture and the food value chain. Companies, research institutes and even independent researchers can apply for grants through May 12, 2011, in order to assist their research in the field.
"Germany is leading the way in sustainable water management. This new program sends a strong signal to researchers and innovators around the world to join our efforts, especially as climate change calls our attention to water scarcity and food security issues worldwide," stated Flerida Regueira Cortizo, Senior Manager for Environmental Technologies at Germany Trade & Invest in Berlin.
Projects eligible for funding include those to improve water preparation, cleansing and recycling as well as water conserving irrigation systems or smart measurement systems for determining irrigation needs. Customized techniques and processes for areas outside of Germany are eligible as long as the participating company establishes a place of business in Germany. This initiative joins several other programs that support companies and innovators as part of Germany's federal research strategy "Bio Economy 2030".
