German Shepherd Dog Is West Palm Beach's Most Popular Breed
Nationally, Labrador Retriever Remains America's Most Popular As Bigger Breeds Dominate the List
NEW YORK, Jan. 31, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This year, the German Shepherd Dog took West Palm Beach's top spot in the American Kennel Club's (AKC®) 2013 rankings of the city's most popular AKC-recognized dog breeds, unseating the Lab, who remained #1 in the U.S. overall.
"West Palm Beach sets trends of its own," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "Even though the Lab has remained number one nationally for 23 years, West Palm Beach has spoken. It loves its German Shepherds!"
The German Shepherd Dog was also recognized as the #1 pup in Miami, Chicago, and Philadelphia.
Big shake-ups and surprises were evident throughout West Palm Beach's rankings. The city showed little love to the Bulldog, as it fell three spots to number six in 2013, while Yorkshire Terriers made a big comeback, rising three spots to number five.
West Palm Beach's top 5 breeds for 2013 (as compared to 2012) are as follows:

The AKC today also announced its nationwide rankings, and Labrador Retriever lovers have spoken! The intelligent, family-friendly breed has taken the #1 spot for the 23rd consecutive year, the longest reign at the top in AKC history. In addition to the Lab holding strong to its most popular title, the French Bulldog has seen a sharp rise in popularity over the past decade with a 323% increase in registrations since 2003. The affectionate, easy to care for Frenchie rose three spots this year to number 11, its highest position since its AKC induction in 1898. French Bulldogs are known to be loveable lap warmers and are easily adaptable to city or suburban living due to their easily-groomed coats and minimal exercise requirements.
West Palm Beach's favorite breed, the German Shepherd Dog, landed at number 2 on this year's national list.
