German American Chamber of Commerce Midwest, Minnesota Names Carl Zeiss Industrial Metrology, LLC, as Company of the Year

The Company of the Year award honors German firms with a presence in Minnesota and Minnesota firms with a presence in Germany, that meet several criteria: significant innovation in their industry; promotion of German-American trade in Minnesota; level of employment in Minnesota; environmental stewardship; and service and participation as a community leader in Minnesota.

ZEISS Industrial Metrology (www.zeiss.com/metrology) has been a member of the Minnesota German-American community since the 1980s. The parent company, Carl Zeiss AG, is one of the oldest corporations in the world, founded in 1846 in Germany, and has grown into one of the largest industrial multinationals in Germany. Today it has a number of business units and facilities throughout the U.S., including the ZEISS Industrial Metrology division headquartered in Maple Grove. ZEISS employs over 3,000 people in the U.S., and over 500 in Minnesota.

ZEISS Industrial Metrology serves the automotive and medical device industries, providing precision measuring systems (metrology) capable of tolerances down to one micron, a tenth the width of a human hair.

The German American Chamber presented this award to ZEISS Industrial Metrology based on several factors: their long and productive presence in Minnesota; rapid job and sales growth; their record of technological innovation; their commitment to a strong skills-training effort, including apprenticeships for German and Minnesota youth; and a focus on environmentally friendly manufacturing and recycling processes. According to Don Keysser, Secretary of the German American Chamber, "ZEISS Industrial Metrology exemplifies the strong tradition of innovation, community involvement and human resource focus that marks German firms active in Minnesota."
