Gerard V. Mantese Receives 2017 Roberts P. Hudson Award - State Bar of Michigan's Highest Honor for Service to the Legal Profession and Community
TROY, Mich., Nov. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The State Bar of Michigan has conferred its highest honor, the 2017 Roberts P. Hudson Award, on Gerard V. Mantese. Mr. Mantese is the CEO of Mantese Honigman, P.C., which handles business litigation in Michigan, New York, and Missouri, including contracts, real estate matters, and shareholder and LLC member disputes. The Hudson Award recognizes lawyers "for their unselfish rendering of outstanding and unique service to and on behalf of the State Bar of Michigan, the legal profession, and public." In addition to annually recovering tens of millions of dollars for his business clients, Mr. Mantese is heavily involved in the community. He has devoted hundreds of hours teaching students about our system of government. He has led students in numerous civic projects, including the Michigan State Bar's annual Law Day competition with research and filming of recreations of historic trials. Mr. Mantese's students took first place three years in a row. He has also assisted students in researching and publishing a book on several accomplished women, entitled Women Who Changed the World (Sunbury Press 2015). He has been active in State Bar activities for over 20 years, serving on various committees and boards and serving as an editor of the Trial Practice Column for the Michigan Bar Journal.
From 2008 through 2013, Gerard Mantese filed and won several landmark cases on behalf of thousands of children with autism spectrum disorder. Johns v. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Case No. 08-12272 (ED MI); Potter, et al. v. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Case No. 10-14981 (ED MI); Miner, et al. v. Olga Dazzo, Case No. 10-15018 (ED MI); and Churchill et al. v. Cigna Corporation, Case No. 10-06911 (ED PA). These victories allowed thousands of children with autism spectrum disorder to access needed applied behavior analysis therapy, defeating insurers' claims that such therapy was experimental. He has devoted hundreds of pro bono hours assisting survivors of domestic violence to access the legal justice system through restraining orders, divorces, and other legal avenues. In this effort, he has worked with First Step, Western Wayne Project on Domestic Violence. Mr. Mantese also regularly devotes time to assisting tenants facing eviction in Detroit's 36th District Court.
Mr. Mantese, along with his highly skilled team of attorneys, handles multi-million dollar business cases in courts throughout the United States. He argued the only two shareholder and LLC member oppression cases ever accepted by the Michigan Supreme Court. Madugula v. Taub, 496 Mich 685 (2014); and Frank v. Linkner, 500 Mich. 133 (2017). He is a frequent author on shareholder rights and duties, LLC's, and partnerships. Some of his articles include Michigan Business Courts and Oppression, Michigan Bar Journal (January 2017); and Navigating the World of Fiduciary Duty Within the Corporate Context, Journal of The Missouri Bar (September-October 2016). Mr. Mantese has been repeatedly named to Best Lawyers and Super Lawyers, and he has been continuously named as one of the top trial attorneys in the State of Michigan.
