McMahon graduated summa cum laude from the University Of San Diego School Of Law in 1964, after attending night school in San Diego before his admission to the California Bar. He received his B.S., cum laude, from the University of Southern California in 1956.
Prior to entering law school, McMahon was a naval aviator and, later, before entering the practice of law, held the position of Chief of Contracts for General Dynamics Corporation's Centaur Space Vehicle Program. Since then, as an attorney, he has tried more than 100 cases in matters including the disparate areas of anti-competitive practices, family law, construction, corporations, eminent domain, employment, insurance, intellectual property, limited liability companies, partnerships, personal injury, planning and zoning, products-liability, professional malpractice, real estate, and securities, among others.
Due to his outstanding work in his field, McMahon has received numerous honors, awards, and recognitions, and is a member of various prestigious organizations. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a member of The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, has been designated as Distinguished Alumnus by the University Of San Diego School Of Law in 1976 and 1980.
Furthermore, he is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, San Diego Chapter (President, 1981), the Defense Counsel Association and Bar Association, a former member of the Board of Trustees for the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, and practices before the California Supreme Court, U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, U.S. District Court, Northern, Southern and Central Districts of California and U.S. Claims Court.
He was the recipient of Daniel T. Broderick, III Memorial Award, bestowed by the San Diego Plaintiffs' and Defendants' Lawyers Associations, and was recognized by Best Lawyers in America in the categories of Business Litigation, Family Law and "Bet-the-Company" Litigation (1988-current).
McMahon also received the Achievement Award from San Diego Super Lawyers in 2014 and 2015, and was named as one of the "10 Best Attorneys" in California by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys in 2015.
McMahon has four children, one adopted child, and ten grandchildren with his wife, Donna McMahon. He dedicates this recognition to his wife and he thanks her for her continuing love and support since their blind date sixty years ago.
