Georgia Youth Science & Technology Centers Receives $56,000 Contribution From the AT&T Foundation
Contribution will support a leadership development program.
KENNESAW, Ga., Nov. 8, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The AT&T Foundation, the philanthropy arm of AT&T*, today announced that Georgia Youth Science & Technology Centers, Inc. (GYSTC) has received funds to support 12 Family Science Nights at locations held within each of the 13 GYSTC Regional Center service areas that are located across Georgia thanks to a $56,000 contribution from the company.
Family Science Nights will engage students and their families in "Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics" (STEM) activities. Each event will be part of a standardized set of curriculum activities related to the Georgia Performance Standards, which is required curriculum for all public schools in Georgia and tightly linked to STEM.
"Family Science Nights will bring students together with their families to help inspire an appreciation in all sciences, mathematics, technologies and related disciplines," said Dr. Frank Butler, executive director for GYSTC. "I would like to thank AT&T for its contribution to the program."
GYSTC focuses exclusively on STEM subjects in grades K-8, with a particular emphasis on science. In 2009, GYSTC served more than 10,000 teachers and 90,000 students in Georgia. GYSTC serves nearly 50 percent of Georgia's public school systems primarily in low-income and rural areas of the state.
"The AT&T Foundation has a strong record of supporting initiatives and projects that enhance the education of our children," said Don Barbour, regional director – external affairs for AT&T Georgia. "I am proud we are able to support the great work already underway at GYSTC to help students succeed in school."
The funding will be used for programming, curriculum development, technology, materials and supplies including static displays, as well as any speaker expenses associated with Family Science Nights.
