The partners are taking over control of the resort from Textron Financial Corp., which has owned the property since it was foreclosed on June 1, 2010. The transaction closed April 1. Financial details were not disclosed.
Tapatio Springs was founded in 1981 and today has 27 holes of golf, a resort hotel, over 20,000 square feet of convention and meeting facilities, tennis, swimming and a fitness club. It was the first golf resort/conference center in the San Antonio area and opened up that market for visitors and corporate outings.
"I have lived near Boerne, and over the years Tom and I watched what was happening at Tapatio Springs and we always believed it could be a real jewel," Strait said. "When the opportunity came up, we decided to go for it and make this dream come true."
Cusick has been a Boerne resident since 1985. He founded Benefit Planners, based in Boerne, and sold the company to Fiserv in 2001. Since then, he has gone on to develop his dream residential community, Estancia at Thunder Valley, near Boerne and will bring that creative energy to Tapatio Springs.
"We see this as a tremendous opportunity to turn Tapatio Springs into an incredible resort that will attract golfers and visitors from across the country," Cusick said. "We are putting together an all-star team to take Tapatio Springs to a completely new level, a point of pride for members and guests, homeowners and the entire Boerne area."
"We have begun our master plan and want the end result to be extraordinary," Strait said.
"The resort has suffered through uncertainty, rumors and a lack of maintenance," Cusick stated. "George and I are making a personal commitment to eliminate those issues and turn Tapatio Springs into the showplace it should be."
As Strait said, recalling one of his 57 #1hits, "This may not be 'ocean front property,' but it's the next best thing."
