GeoLearning Releases 'Your Successful Virtual Classroom' Podcast
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- GeoLearning, provider of the leading Software as a Service (SaaS) GeoMaestro™ Learning Management System (LMS) and comprehensive Managed Learning Services, presents a discussion with Dr. Matthew Casey, GeoLearning's manager of client learning services, as the most recent addition to the company's new podcast series.
In the podcast "Your Successful Virtual Classroom: Best Practices for VILT," Casey discusses his recommendations for organizations preparing virtual instructor-led training (VILT) content and curricula. He also takes a moment to warn organizations against simply taking instructor-led training (ILT) presentations and repurposing them for use in VILT.
"What I caution people the most about is just taking an ILT and throwing it into a VILT medium; it just simply doesn't work. And the reason it doesn't work is you (need) a lot more interactivity. What you need to do is actually engage the audience; they need to be active in the learning process," said Casey during his discussion with Craig Olson, GeoLearning's director of marketing. Casey went on to explain that every VILT presentation should offer some sort of interactivity every five minutes so the instructor can gauge audience understanding of the material.
Within the podcast, Casey discusses many different VILT-related issues, including recommended length, training the trainer, learner expectations, use of multiple interactivity tools, common terminology, importance of communicating a backup strategy, and the significant time and cost savings that come with the medium.
"One of the biggest costs is time; time you can never get back. Time spent travelling for an instructor-led session, be it on the part of the learners or the trainers, is something you can't get back," Casey said. "By just participating in a VILT, the only time you are out is the time it takes to boot up your computer."
