SAN FRANCISCO, June 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Lisa Alderson, CEO and co-founder of Genome Medical, Inc., [www.genomemedical.com], will be a featured speaker on June 22 at the BIO International Convention in San Diego. She will present as part of a panel entitled "Digital Health's Rocky Road: Business Plans That Work."
Genome Medical was founded to help solve genomic medicine's access problem. As the number of genetic tests on the market grows exponentially, the need for clinicians to interpret the test results grows as well. Yet today there are only about 6,000 genetics experts available. The health care system faces a severe shortage of qualified advisors to help patients and health care providers navigate testing options and understand and act on test results.
In response, Genome Medical has launched a network of genetic experts who deliver fast, convenient services via the company's telemedicine platform.
"Making the benefits of genomics accessible to everyone will transform medicine," Alderson said. "The only way to do this efficiently and at scale is with technology. Our telegenomics platform can help improve care and lower costs by linking genetic experts with the patients and providers who need their services."
The company is structured as an independent medical practice. Its genetic experts:
- Consult with individuals to determine the risk for genetic disease, and help them navigate the complex array of genetic testing options;
- Facilitate testing logistics, including test requisition and sample collection;
- Review and explain genetic test results, including reports from physician-ordered tests and direct-to-consumer testing companies;
- Provide guidance on genetic testing in reproductive health, proactive health and cancer susceptibility.
In addition, Genome Medical works directly with individual physicians, medical groups, community hospitals, payers, testing labs and employer organizations interested in independent genetic consultation services. The company partners with (among others) Illumina, to provide services through its Understand Your Genome whole genome sequencing program, and Good Start Genetics, to counsel couples undergoing carrier screening.
Genome Medical's other co-founders are Randy Scott, PhD, a visionary in the field of precision medicine and the executive chairman of genetic testing company Invitae, and Robert C. Green, MD, MPH. Dr. Green is director of the Genomes2People Research Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital, an associate member of the Broad Institute and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Genome Medical recently announced Series A funding from Canaan Partners, Illumina Ventures, HealthInvest Equity Partners and Flywheel Ventures, with Canaan Partners leading the financing.
