SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Genome Medical, Inc., an early-stage company using telemedicine to integrate genomic medicine into everyday health care [www.genomemedical.com], announced three new additions to its executive team.
"Our mission is to increase access to genomic technologies through a network of clinical genetics experts serving both physicians and patients," said CEO Lisa Alderson, who co-founded Genome Medical last year with Invitae [www.invitae.com/en] executive chairman Randy Scott, PhD, and Robert C. Green, MD, MPH, of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. "We expect to grow rapidly in 2017. Our new team members will help us drive toward our goal of making high-touch, high-tech genome-centered health care accessible to everyone."
Steven Bleyl, MD, PhD, has joined the company as its Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Bleyl is a board-certified medical geneticist and associate professor in medical genetics and pediatrics at the University of Utah. He previously directed the Clinical Genetics Institute for Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, where he oversaw provision of clinical genetic services and genetic testing, including implementation of a system-wide infrastructure for storage and use of genomic data.
Erynn Gordon, MS, CGC, is Genome Medical's Vice President for Clinical Operations. Ms. Gordon, a board-certified genetic counselor with more than 15 years of clinical and research experience, has held leadership roles at the Coriell Institute for Medical Research, Invitae and 23andMe. She is a past president of the American Board of Genetic Counselors and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Society of Genetic Counselors.
Audrey Fan, MS, CGC, joins the team as Senior Genetic Counselor, Service Delivery Innovation. Ms. Fan is a board-certified genetic counselor who oversaw clinical cancer genetic counseling services for Geisinger, one of the largest integrated health systems in the U.S. Through Geisinger's precision medicine research initiative, MyCode, Ms. Fan helped establish two multidisciplinary clinics providing specialist care for hereditary cancer syndromes.
"I'm honored to have Steve, Erynn, and Audrey join our team," said Alderson, who was formerly Chief Commercial Officer and Chief Strategy Officer at Invitae. "Their expertise will help Genome Medical offer high quality consultations to patients and physicians seeking trusted advisors to navigate the rapidly evolving field of genomics."
"It's an exciting time to be joining Genome Medical," Bleyl said. "Advances in information technology now allow us to extend the promise of genomic medicine to a much broader population. I'm looking forward to working with our world-class team to deliver on that promise."
"We believe that helping patients and physicians access health-related genetic insights can improve patient outcomes, lower the cost of care, and prevent disease," said Genome Medical co-founder and chairman of the board Randy Scott, PhD. "Each of the new additions to our team has an important role to play as Genome Medical increases access to genetic information and brings it into mainstream medical practice in a medically responsible way."
The company has built a network of genetics experts who are now offering telemedicine consultations to early access customers in over 40 states. Coverage in all 50 states is coming soon. Genome Medical recently announced a partnership with Good Start Genetics to provide genetic counseling to couples undergoing carrier testing. The company currently offers tele-genetics sessions for predisposition testing and reproductive health. Adult genetics and pediatric genetics will be coming later this year.
