Iconic race will celebrate the centennial of women's suffrage in New York State with proceeds slated to support National Women's Hall of Fame
SENECA FALLS, N.Y., Feb. 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Generations Bank, organizing sponsor of the second annual Women's Right to Run, today unveiled an unprecedented invitation list of international "power women" who are being encouraged to attend the upcoming Women's Right to Run 19K/5K in historic Seneca Falls—birthplace of the women's rights movement.
The Women's Right to Run 19K/5K celebrates the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Seneca Falls was the site of the first Women's Rights Convention in 1848. This fitting tribute race will benefit the National Women's Hall of Fame's fundraising campaign, which is raising funds to rehabilitate the former Seneca Falls Knitting Mill into its future home, The Center for Great Women.
Leading the marquee invite list is the First Lady, the Hon. Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden and Ms. Oprah Winfrey. An additional 50+ high powered female leaders, CEOs, actresses, athletes and advocates are also being invited. Special guests may participate in the race through running, walking or as an honorary starter.
"As we join together to celebrate female empowerment and how far we've come since the 19th amendment was signed, we're again extending the invitation to many of the women who continue to fight for progress and serve as an inspiration to all," said Katie MacIntyre, AVP – Marketing Officer, Generations Bank. "The race for equal rights is never really over, but we continue to make great strides and these women are shining examples of that effort. Especially with 2017 being the Centennial of Women's Right to Vote in New York State we would be thrilled for these VIP women to join us in the celebration."
The distinguished invitee list includes:
Abby Wambach |
Katie Couric |
The run is again a partner event for 261 Fearless, Inc., a global community of female runners and walkers founded by Kathrine Switzer. Switzer, who made history as the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as a numbered entry in 1967, is again the national spokesperson for the run. Switzer will run the Boston Marathon just weeks before the Right to Run for the 50th anniversary of that 1967 run.
The Women's Right to Run race is open to men and women and will take place on Saturday, May 13, 2017 in Seneca Falls, New York. In its inaugural year people ages 4 to 88 participated. Runners have the option of registering to run a 5K or 19K, both of which are USATF (USA Track & Field) certified.
Details about race registration and course maps can be found at righttorun19k.org.
