General Dynamics and Samsung Team to Deliver Commercial Smartphones and Tablets with Defense-grade Security
Companies will provide mobile users with commercial off-the-shelf wireless products that enable secure Internet browsing and access to government networks
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., May 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- General Dynamics C4 Systems today announced that it will integrate its defense-grade cyber and information security technologies into the family of Samsung Approved for Enterprise (SAFE™) smartphones and tablet computers. These SAFE devices will also be upgraded with the new Samsung Secure Android® platform and are designed to deliver a cost-effective commercial solution for customers ranging from the military and government agencies, to law enforcement and public safety, to financial, utility and other industry personnel who need to browse the public Internet as well as access secure networks.
"Operating on commercial cell phone networks and in cyberspace on the same device is becoming increasingly hazardous, particularly if you are sharing sensitive information," said Chris Marzilli, president of General Dynamics C4 Systems. "Combining General Dynamics' expertise in cyber security with Samsung's commercial products creates a new, extremely cost-effective selection of secure mobile devices."
The secure technologies that General Dynamics will integrate into the Samsung products are similar to those trusted to protect information classified from the Secret level and below for the U.S. Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, federal agencies and coalition partners. The enhanced Samsung products should be available by mid-2013 and will be sold by General Dynamics and through government contract vehicles such as the General Services Administration (GSA).
With 20 different Samsung SAFE devices available at all major U.S. carriers, price points and form factors, Samsung gives customers the ability to choose a mobile device that works best for each organization's unique operating environment and budget parameters. In addition to enhanced security provided by General Dynamics, SAFE smartphones and tablets provide organizations with a holistic enterprise mobility solution that ensures IT compliance and serves as a resource for enterprises needing a simple, yet comprehensive strategy for deploying Android devices into their networks.
"Samsung is pleased to partner with General Dynamics, a world leader in defense-grade security products," said Dr. Injong Rhee, Vice President, Global Head of Enterprise Strategy and Engineering Groups. "Samsung's new secure platform is equipped with FIPS-certified VPN and on-device encryption, secure separation of work spaces, fortified mobile device management (MDM) and integrity management features. Together, Samsung and General Dynamics will deliver feature-rich and cost-effective products to this information security-sensitive industry."
The Samsung SAFE devices with defense-grade security will join General Dynamics C4 Systems' growing line of commercial broadband solutions and networking products. The company designs, manufacturers and delivers trusted and secure communications systems, command and control systems and operational hardware to customers within the U.S. Department of Defense, federal and civilian agencies, the intelligence community and international customers.
