Geneia Joy of Medicine Challenge Live Pitch Off Announced at MATTER during the AMA Board of Delegates Meeting
Challenge Inspires Physicians to Submit Ideas to Contend with the Business of Medicine
CHICAGO, April 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Geneia Joy of Medicine Challenge, an online competition for U.S.-licensed physicians and medical students, has elicited numerous ideas to ease the burden of paperwork and other business-related activities that doctors say are hampering their ability to develop meaningful relationships with patients. The Challenge is an outcome of a Geneia survey of 400 physicians that revealed that 87% of physicians believe the "business and regulation of healthcare" has changed the practice of medicine for the worse.
"Our survey found that most physicians love what they do, but are increasingly frustrated by time constraints brought on by paperwork to meet compliance and operational requirements," said Heather Lavoie, Geneia's Chief Operating Officer. "Who better to ask for suggestions on how to minimize these burdens than the doctors themselves? The Challenge is a quick and easy way to submit ideas to restore the joy of medicine and start an online dialogue with other physicians."
Responses to the Challenge have ranged from:
- Projecting the electronic health record (EHR) during a patient visit,
- Establishing a pool of physician leaders to advocate for physician- and patient-focused changes to healthcare, and
- Introducing automated 'wallet cards' that include all pertinent patient information and would be updated each time a patient visits their physician -- an idea that has generated the most physician votes and comments.
Judging for the challenge will be done by a panel of physician judges in combination with peer-sourced, online voting. The winner in each of the three categories - the EHR of the Future, Population Health, and Joy of Medicine - will receive a $1,000 cash prize and be invited to a live pitch off in front of their peers on June 8th at MATTER, Chicago's newly launched healthcare technology incubator for next-generation health IT, medical device, diagnostics, and biopharma companies. The winner of the live pitch off will receive in-kind Geneia consulting resources valued at $5,000 to help develop their idea.
"Much of healthcare comes down to the interaction between clinicians and patients, and new technologies are being developed every day that have implications on how that communication happens," said Steven Collens, MATTER CEO. "We are looking forward to hosting the Joy of Medicine pitch off that will showcase new technology solutions that improve care and outcomes."
Physicians can submit their ideas through May 6th by visiting the challenge site managed by Medstro, a social professional networking and career development community by and for physicians, at: https://medstro.com/groups/joy.
