Gen. Stanley McChrystal to Speak at Excellence in Government Conference

WASHINGTON, May 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- General Stanley McChrystal, who led the U.S. military engagement in Afghanistan before retiring last year, will keynote the Excellence in Government Conference on May 23, conference organizers announced today.

As a four-star general, McChrystal carried out President Obama's decision to "surge" thousands of new troops into the battle for Afghanistan. Earlier, he commanded Joint Special Operations in the Middle East, and guided the forces that captured Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

McChrystal's retirement in 2010 came in the wake of media-generated controversy about his command. He returned this year to public service as leader of Michelle Obama's initiative to better address the stresses and challenges faced by military families.

In his remarks to the conference, McChrystal will touch on the media uproar that surrounded his retirement, but will focus on lessons he's learned about leadership, goal-oriented management strategies, lessons from his 34-year military career, and his new role in the military families initiative.
