WASHINGTON, Oct. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Celebrations continue around the country as students, teachers and administrators observe National GEAR UP Week, October 24-28. Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), is the architect of the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP).

Since its inception in 1999, GEAR UP has contributed almost $4 billion to serve 12 million students in 49 states, Washington, DC and the American territories. The program prepares students for college by providing financial aid information, counseling for parents on their important role in their child's college education and incentives for students to stay in school.
Congressman Fattah recently keynoted at the GEAR UP West Conference in Portland, Oregon. The conference brought together students, teachers, and counselors from 12 states. During his visit, the congressman sat down for a wide reaching conversation with the GEAR UP West alumni and current students. It was quite an enlightening discussion.
