HOUSTON, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA, the retail energy business of GDF SUEZ Energy North America, plans to enter into four new Pennsylvania competitive retail electricity markets in 2011, which will bring more options for pricing and products to commercial and industrial customers in the PECO, MetEd, Penelec, and Allegheny Power (West Penn) service territories.

In preparation for the shift from capped electricity rates to competitive market rates, GDF SUEZ Energy Resources will begin pricing transactions on April 1, that have a January 2011 start date.
Robert Wilson, President and CEO of GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA, said that the new competitive environment will reshape these markets and could deliver tangible benefits for commercial and industrial customers.
"Similar to the rate cap expiration that took place in the Pennsylvania Power and Light market in early 2010, customers in PECO, MetEd, Penelec, and Allegheny Power will soon experience significant changes regarding the way in which they can select an electricity provider," said Wilson. "With the competitive marketplace now opening up, customers will have the opportunity to select products and pricing options that can be tailored to meet their operational needs, such as budget certainty."
With its entry into these new markets, GDF SUEZ Energy Resources plans to add to its rapidly growing presence in Pennsylvania by opening an office in the state.
Parent company GDF SUEZ Energy North America already owns two cogeneration facilities in the Keystone State: the Northeastern Power Cogeneration Facility (NEPCO), which serves the electricity and steam needs of two local entities; and the Northumberland Facility, a biomass/clean waste-wood-burning power plant.
David Braun, Regional Vice President of PJM with GDF SUEZ Energy Resources, said further expansion into the Pennsylvania market also will enable more customers to benefit from advantages that have made the company the second-largest non-residential retail energy provider in North America.
"GDF SUEZ Energy Resources is known for its competitive pricing, transparency and reliability," he said. "Our goal is to educate customers in these markets about the most cost-effective energy options available so they have an opportunity to make informed decisions before change sets in."
GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA is the second largest non-residential retail energy supplier in the U.S. and currently serves commercial and industrial customers in 11 markets: Delaware, Texas, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C. The company serves over 50,000 accounts for customers having a peak demand ranging from 50 KW to more than 200 MW, with an estimated peak load totaling over 8,000 MW.
