PITTSBURGH, July 6, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Gateway Rehab's Neil Kennedy Recovery Centers (NKRC) recently received a $20,000 grant from the Western Reserve Health Foundation to help fund a health and wellness garden project at NKRC's Rush Blvd. location in Youngstown, Ohio.
The project involves creating an outdoor garden for mindfulness training and yoga classes, promising new therapies that will complement NKRC's current evidence-based addiction treatment practices. The new treatment offerings will help patients develop greater self-confidence and self-reliance, and an appreciation of nature, which is life in its simplest form.
"The generous gift of $20,000 from Western Reserve Health Foundation will launch our mindfulness and yoga program while providing a natural garden setting where our patients can enjoy the outdoors and engage in purposeful activities that promote recovery," said Carolyn Givens, executive director, Neil Kennedy Recovery Centers. "We're grateful that the Western Reserve Health Foundation thought this to be a worthy project and thank them for their generous support."
Work on the wellness garden will begin later this summer and will continue through early fall. A certified yoga instructor familiar with addiction and 12-step yoga, which relates the practice of yoga to the process of recovery, will offer hour-long, gender-specific mindfulness training and yoga classes twice a week.
The Western Reserve Health Foundation is a supporting organization of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, which operates exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes that effectively assist and promote the well-being of residents in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties. Information about the Foundation can be found at www.cfmv.org.
Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic was the nation's first nonprofit addiction treatment facility of its kind. Since its inception in 1946 as the Youngstown Committee on Alcoholism, Inc., NKRC has provided a safe, secure place where those with substance use disorders in Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley can receive treatment. In 1999, NKRC became a service of Gateway Rehab.
