Gateway Rehab Benefits From CMU Fraternity Soccer Event
Pi Kappa Alpha, Beta Sigma Chapter, Pays It Forward by Remembering a Brother
PITTSBURGH, Dec. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The members of Pi Kappa Alpha, Beta Sigma Chapter, at Carnegie Mellon University made sure a day special to them will benefit others by making a recent donation to Gateway Rehab.
Today is the 90th anniversary of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at CMU, and the actives wanted to share their heritage and future by donating $1,250 to Gateway Rehab. The funds were raised through the organization's second soccer tournament held in November on the university's campus. The chapter holds the event to remember a former member who died from alcohol-related causes in 2010.
"To me, it's remarkable that these young men would put the needs of others before their own, especially now, when they are not only celebrating an important anniversary for their organization, but finals and the winter holidays as well," observed Dr. Kenneth S. Ramsey, PhD, Gateway Rehab's President and CEO. "These young men surely send an important message out to the community about raising awareness of alcohol-related issues. Their thoughtfulness and generosity are impressive."
"We'd heard of Gateway Rehab through its Squirrel Hill location, which is in close proximity to our campus," explained Chris Shellhamer, the chapter's president and a CMU senior majoring in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering. "After researching organizations, we chose Gateway Rehab because it does a lot of good work. We felt this event and our donation could make a difference for young individuals who suffer from alcohol-related issues as well as raise awareness about the problem."
While the soccer tournament was organized by Pi Kappa Alpha, other Greek organizations and independents from Carnegie Mellon University participated, as well as teams from other schools. The total included 16 teams.
"We want to thank everybody for their continued support and participation. We hope the tournament continues to grow," Mr. Shellhamer said.
