STAMFORD, Conn., Feb. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Gale, part of Cengage Learning and a leading publisher of research and reference resources for libraries, schools and businesses, today announced that Gale World Scholar: Latin America and the Caribbean has received the 2011 PROSE Award for Best eProduct in the Social Sciences category.
The PROSE Awards are sponsored by the Professional Scholarship Publishing (PSP) division of the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and are given out annually at the PSP Annual Conference. The PROSE Awards recognizes the very best in professional and scholarly publishing by distinguishing the finest books, journals, and electronic content in over 40 categories. Publishers and authors are awarded for their dedication to innovative works of research and for adding to the formation and creation of major academic resources. Award recipients are decided upon by peer publishers, librarians, and medical professionals.
"We are honored to receive this year's Best eProduct PROSE Award for Gale World Scholar: Latin America and the Caribbean and to have our innovative electronic resources recognized amongst the best in the industry," said Frank Menchaca, Executive Vice President and Publisher of Gale. "We look forward to expanding our revolutionary library product line with more interactive materials on the most studied areas of the world."
Launched in April of 2011, Gale World Scholar: Latin America and the Caribbean is the first in a new series of electronic regional studies-based resources. A new product category for libraries, Gale World Scholar marks the first time any publisher is combining historical and contemporary reference and archival materials with current events in a contextual manner. The product gives undergraduate and graduate students, and university faculty new insight into different regions of the world, touching upon the culture and tradition of an area's inhabitants while diving into a detailed account of its history.
Gale World Scholar: Latin America and the Caribbean begins with the colonial history of the region and covers the last 500 years up to and including today. Important regional historical events and subjects covered within the resource include the Spanish-American War, the life and work of painter Frida Kahlo and other Mexican muralists, and the role of coffee in the economic and social life of the region.
