SAN JOSE, Calif., March 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- GainSpan® Corporation, a leader in low power Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi connectivity for the Internet of Things, and Exosite, a provider of cloud-connectivity solutions for embedded applications, are working together to develop a Wi-Fi enabled, cloud connected solution for the Internet of Things. For embedded designers, the new solution will reduce the time, effort and cost involved in getting new, innovative, connected products and services to market.
By connecting to the cloud, devices can be monitored, managed and controlled remotely from computers, smartphones and tablets, allowing users to graphically interact with their devices and data through a web portal and set alerts to receive emails or SMS when a condition occurs. In machine to machine (M2M) applications, sensor data could be analyzed in the cloud and automatically trigger an action as a result.
A demonstration of the new Exosite cloud-based connectivity solution will take place at DESIGN West 2012, March 26 – 29, 2012 in San Jose, in the Renesas Electronics booth #1507. Sensor data from a Renesas' RL78 development kit using Exosite's API will be sent over GainSpan Wi-Fi to the Exosite cloud platform, showing the ease of building connected products that can be monitored and controlled.
Exosite's One Platform Cloud Connectivity Solution
The One Platform cloud connectivity solution provides for easy integration of all the building blocks – from GainSpan Wi-Fi connectivity modules (including cloud-capable firmware) to data platform APIs and web dashboards – enabling developers to quickly build next generation connected products.
The Exosite cloud connectivity solution, designed for Internet of Things applications, provides data acquisition, back-haul and storage capabilities, and monitoring and management of connected devices. It encompasses cloud connectivity APIs, the One Platform cloud-based data platform, and a dedicated web-dashboard interface.
GainSpan's fully certified, low power Wi-Fi modules provide for easy integration with microcontroller solutions, enabling embedded designers to quickly add Wi-Fi connectivity to any 8-32-bit MCU – through a serial interface and using AT commands. The modules are pre-loaded with serial to Wi-Fi firmware with complete Wi-Fi functionality including security, WPS and provisioning features running on the module as well as the networking stack, an embedded HTTP server with network configuration pages, and limited AP capability for ease of provisioning.
"With the proliferation of ubiquitous Wi-Fi access in residential, commercial and industrial environments, cost effective and easy to integrate connectivity via Wi-Fi for embedded devices has become essential in enabling cloud-connected M2M applications and the Internet of Things" said Hans Rempel, Chief Executive Officer for Exosite. "Moreover the ultra-low power consumption of the GainSpan modules enable connectivity to a wide range of battery operated devices and sensors."
"Exosite's One Platform and Portal's web applications offer great utility to developers, device OEM's and users, helping minimize time and risk for developers of connected products" said Bernard Aboussouan, vice president of marketing, GainSpan. "Developers can easily set-up devices, data sources, events and alerts through the portal; customized dashboards can be created within minutes using drag-and-drop configuration, setup-wizards, graphical widgets and other functionalities."
