SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Canon, the world's leading advanced design and manufacturing industry resource, along with Design News has announced Andrew Morris has been named Gadget Freak of the Year. Gadget Freak is devoted to the projects made by part-time inventors. Our most recent contributors range from a 15-year-old high school student, to college students, to retired engineers, and we've seen projects that help people in some way and others that are just plain fun. Gadget Freak has long been sponsored by Allied Electronics.

"In my opinion, my gadget is not necessarily any better than any of the other gadgets, from a technical standpoint, but I think it won because it helps a paralyzed man. Your votes have shown that toys are cool, but it's really about helping other people. That's the coolest thing of all." - Andrew Morris, Gadget Freak Award Winner
Competition was strong for the inaugural Gadget Freak of the Year contest. There were six rounds of semi-finals, with four gadgets in each round. Morris was a winner in three of the semi-finals: "A Gadget's Call for Assistance", "Inexpensive Dimmable LED Desk Lamp", and "Speed Regulator for Rotary Tool".
"What we love about Andrew's gadget, aside from the ultimate potential to really help people when they need it most, is the evolution of inspiration that led to the final design. There is something almost profound in the fact that only when he stopped to hear the silence, could he finally find the victim's voice. Cheesy, we know — we can't help it. But it's these unexpected, almost counterintuitive, discoveries that make technology such an exciting field to participate in. Allied extends sincere gratitude and congratulations to Mr. Morris. An outcome like this really is what the whole thing is about."
Gabriel Reichman, Marketing Manager, Allied Electronics.
