The Winter 2015 report is based on more than 600 reviews and ratings from business professionals.
The GridSM, which is created from G2 Crowd's software review engine, factors in customer satisfaction reported by users and vendor market presence determined from social and public data to rank products.
Project management software is designed to coordinate effort between members of a team and impose order on the projects they are juggling. Core features allow the organization and assignment of tasks as well as higher-level visualizations of project timelines and processes. Some of these systems employ time tracking or collaboration tools, like document versioning, comments and chat.
Project management tools offer a wide range of functionality, from relatively simple to-do list managers to large enterprise suites, and from industry-specific products to highly customizable, admin-intensive systems.
To qualify as a Leader, a product must receive a high customer satisfaction score and have substantial market presence. Wrike and Microsoft Project were named Leaders in the report. High Performers have high customer satisfaction scores with a smaller market presence than Leaders. Trello, Basecamp, Harvest, AtTask, MindManager, Smartsheet, JIRA and Asana were named High Performers. Wrike earned the highest overall customer satisfaction score.
Across all project management platforms, reviewers reported the product they use meets their requirements at an average rate of 84%, and on average reviewers said they were 87% likely to recommend the product they use.
Some highlights from the project management software reviews on G2 Crowd:
"[Wrike] is a very user-friendly tool that allows not just the people within your company to collaborate and keep track of business plan progression... but also other companies and partners outside of your business can also collaborate with you. All of this while keeping your company specifics visible only to those within your company ecosystem."
- Rayshoun Chambers, Head of Retail Strategic Partnerships and Referrals at Elavon, Inc.
"Microsoft Project has been a standard for tracking projects of various sizes. The dependency chaining works quite well and helps visualize resource and task scheduling. Good for milestone tracking at a high level, while also designating resources to specific tasks. Fits well if you use a waterfall model."
- John Orate, Sr. Manager and IT Professional at Schneider Electric
"[Trello] is a simple to use application that offer many different options for managing your projects no matter your business segment. It provides the best solution for desktop to mobile sync of collaborated pipelines...It's great for sharing project details with all necessary business segments."
- Isaac Van Mechelen, Sales and Marketing Consultant
"Basecamp is really simple to use. [There] are plenty of robust features, but you can get up and running very quickly and get value from it right away. [It] has made sharing information and collaborating a whole lot easier and faster, [and it works] well with people inside and outside of the organization."
- Rick Liebling, Head of Global Marketing at Unmetric Inc.
"[Harvest is clean] and fast, integrates well with Google Apps for user provision, API for integration with external tools, and a great solution from tracking to invoicing for smaller companies."
- Brendan McKitrick, Technical Director at Think Jam
"[AtTask] enhances our implementation team [members'] ability to freely and easily communicate key information and statuses amongst their colleagues. [It's a] truly great tool in a truly complex world."
- Claudia Brozia, Director, Professional Services at Draeger Medical
"I use [MindManager] as my default tool in team meetings, in planning, and in report writing. I usually have this up on a projector in team meetings and people follow along with my agenda, and then we expand out as people give their thoughts on certain items."
- Greg Cimmarrusti, Senior Project Manager at Denovo
"Smartsheet does not have way too many menu options that most users will never need. It is very easy to save and retrieve templates for different kinds of projects, and the Gantt chart is very visually presentable so that I can whip up a schedule and have something complete to present to stakeholders."
- Nishant Bhajaria, Product Manager at Nike
"JIRA works very well for Agile development; breaking the larger job into component parts and then tracking them through the production cycle. If used by everyone along the line, JIRA is a very powerful tool."
- Ryan McDonald, Project Management Director at DreamWorks Animation
"I absolutely love the [Asana] user interface - it's pretty seamless across mobile, tablet and desktop. It's pretty intuitive to the average non PMP-certified person. Drag and drop allows me to easily merge or separate personal and work tasks. Of course, it's fast and free so that always helps."
- Steve Radick, VP and Director of Public Relations at BRUNNER
Of the more than 100 software vendors listed in G2 Crowd's project management software category, the 15 ranked products each received 10 or more ratings and reviews to qualify for inclusion on the GridSM.
Satisfaction rankings are generated from the user reviews, and market presence is calculated from vendor size, market share, and social impact. Based on a combination of these scores, each software solution is categorized as a Leader, High Performer, Contender, or Niche.
